On June 18, an explosion tore through a home in Emporia, Kansas, killing 78-year-old Darrell Bontrager and his 73-year-old wife, Terry. This week investigators confirmed that the cause of the explosion was a natural gas leak inside the home.
Well-known and loved in their community, the couple’s loss is another painful reminder of the silent danger gas leaks pose inside our homes. No family should have to face this kind of devastation without warning. Every state should see Emporia as proof that waiting to act on gas alarm requirements is gambling with lives.
